I agree it would be too costly for ///M to come up with a new design instead of using the existing platform. But, there were many subtle changes of the M5 over the base models to differentiate it. Some have since been picked up by the 550i, etc.
I came from an E39 M5, then a 650i, before the 550i. There is a market for the exclusive looking personal car like the 650i (or CLS). But there is a bigger market for those wanting a versatile everyday sedan along with their performance. I have decided to be in the later camp for now.

I would say the CLS is one of best looking 4-doors ever made.
But the 5er drives better.

Actually, this is not true. M5 looked too much as regular 5er before and it was common complaint, so in E60 they made it more distinct. Still, not different enough to my tastes.
Whats not true? It might be "more distinct" but its still a wolf in sheeps clothing... the costume might not be as sheep like now... but the saying still stands.

Looked at the CLS (mostly out of curiosity) when shopping for my 5 series...all it took was sitting in it to turn me off to the car. claustrophobic interior, way too busy with all the knobs/buttons and the styling was not to my liking at all. Honestly, it was more $$, but looked cheaper than the BMW's.
I'll gladly keep my 535!!

ANY BMW OVER BENZ, ANY DAY!!!!!!!
I tend to agree. M-B can up the HP all it wants, but they do not work enough on the car's balance, handling, and overall weight imo. It is relatively easy to add HP especially with increased displacement. Look at BMWs history with high HP cars... the E46 M3 has 333 HP with a 3.3L naturally aspirated engine (granted a little short on TQ).. the E60 M5 makes a whooping 500HP with a V10 naturally aspirated engine. BMW had to get into turbo-charged engines to keep pace with power and not completely ruin the car's dynamics. M-B (even AMG) simply falls short as a serious performance car.
