Ask a BMW forum and guess what kind of response you're going to get?
Get the 5er. The insult of having MB call a four door sedan a coupe and think the buyers won't know the difference is enough for me to be swayed away. (Yeah, I know it still fits the SAE definition of a coupe) Then throw in the fact that the CLS500 is a pig weighing in a few hundred pounds heavier than the 550 and with MB's 5.0L engine that has less of an output as BMWs older 4.4L engine. MB used to have appeal but with a few exceptions, I think MB has lost some of it's cachet.

by looking at facts on paper, the 550i is faster. that will be my decision.
PLUS
bmw handling (+1)
availability of manuel transmission (+1)
ON THE OTHER HAND
MB CLS500 is definitely sexier in looks and the interior finish is far superior than the e60 (I just saw this one in liquid black...OMG!!), although the buttons and gauges layout are super dumb . (a huge clock next to the tach?)
BOTTOM LINE
Your driving habit (aggressive?)
or can you forsake a bit of that for ultra luxury and comort?

I like CLS. But for $10,000 less. I think 550i is a better choice.
