I have the exact same problem as sigma. I have a UK 2004 E60 and this pulsating whining noise is so annoying. I'm now finding myself switching climate control off or turning up the music. This must be a known fault. Any ideas anyone?
Hi, I have seen this problem in couple of E60 forums, so I thought I will sign up (as you can see I am newbie here) just to help out fellow Bimmer owners here .

I too have a UK 2004 E60 and around 3 months ago, just as it began to get cold here & I started setting the temp higher, and guess what - I started getting the winning noise. Drove me nuts in long drives, no matter how much I tried ignore it.

So I took it down to my local dealer (sytner) and they immediately knew what I was talking about. They said its a common fault and there is two possible reason - either it is the fault with the aux electric pump (which I think someone rightly pointed out in earlier thread) or the fault is with the pump mounting (apparently this was a design fault and there was a general recall last year (2006/7) to fix the problem). So as they admitted missing me out in the recall, they happly changed both the aux pump & the mounting for free.

And now I have a big smile and quieter cabin. Hope this helps.

Very interesting..... I certainly was not notified of any recall by my dealer so might just ask them a question or two at the next service due shortly.
Funnily enough the noise has not been noticeable lately and as you know the weather has been on the cool side.

My 2005 545i makes the same noise at idle too. My KIDS even asked me what "that noise" is, so its fairly pronounced. I'll ask my SA at my next service about the recall, thanks for the info! till then GOTTA TURN UP THE MUSIC!

It's annoying. Mine has always done that. It's the auxiliary electric water pump, and they swapped mine out for a new one and it didn't really go away. Maybe a little better. I hadn't heard the mounting issue. Maybe that's it. I've learned to live with it.

I'll bring back the thread. It's happening to my car. I'd think they'd improve this by now. BMW just can't seem to make a solid climate control system. they better out source it.

-- Did you figure out how to resolve this? My SA blamed the bosch pump. I had the part replaced but it was still there albeit softer noise. I wonder if there are aftermarket replacement parts that resolves this.
