Tire rack says not to do it.

"Never allow your wheels and tires to be steam-cleaned. Hot steam can dull the paint and clearcoat finish on your wheels."

But they would probably take your wheels from you and give them to someone of their choosing!

I asked the body shop at my local BMW dealer, about steam cleaning some time ago, they said it would not cause any harm to do it every couple of months, as doing it too often will make you go blind, i mean could dull the finish of the rim

A trip down memory lane....
When I was a kid we would take the family car to the car wash. Everyone had whitewall tires and they were impossible to clean at home.
The car wash used a steamer on the wheels(hubcaps then) and the ww tires.
That was a real steamer. Mega industrial from a large boiler - it had a long rubber tube and a hand held nozzle. The (real) steam shot out like a rocket. The steam came out like today's presssure washers!!
The wheels/tires came out great.
I was always impressed and wanted a steamer at home.
I should have developed a home steamer then.
