I've been reading the conflicting opinions on CIP upgrades on the forum for some time. I called my dealer to request an upgrade to latest software and he advised that they would only do this if there was a problem with the vehicle that required attention. Any associated benefits form the upgraded sortware were incidental and not available on request. He also mentione that there was an finite number of upgrades that could be performed before the hardware had to be chenged. Is he trying to fob me off?

Can someone explain/guide me to a thread that will explaine about CIP. What does it stand for? How often are upgrades released?

Thanks
First part of what he says is the case. They will only apply CIP upgrades if you can give them a reason to eg CD tracks keep incrementing after car switched off.

The bit about finite number of "writes to flash memory" MAY be right (eg as in firmware of a PC DVD drive) but hey that's usually in the 100's of "burns" or updates.

I have also noticed that the "accept" for the i-drive does it on it's own. Has anyone else experienced this and is it true that it's suppose to do this?
Yes, mine does too. After a few seconds it goes back to the menu on its own without having to "Accept". What would be nice is for the iDrive to bring you back to where you were when you stopped the car and restarted - so if you had the map on, it should remember. Now it just goes back to the menu and you have to select the map again.

Note for those of you who don't know this - if you move the controller in the direction of whatever you were before and hold it for at least two seconds, it will take you back there. In the annoying example above, when you restart the car and it takes you back to the main menu, push the controller right for Navigation for 2+ seconds and the last screen you were on comes back. If you had the map on that's what comes back.

I have not checked the eyebrows - did not pay attention but I know the angel eyes are on on both lamps (all four actually). I'll check the amber eyebrows later.

Cheers!

Also, the folding mirrors on lock has been lost in CIP23 too apparently!

Indeed, I think they were fobbing me off because they couldn't be bothered to connect it all up and enable it... (They'll do it when applying the next CIP)

Find a problem on the update list (on this forum) and then report that problem... (Usually results in an upgrade...)

CIP is Coding, Individualization and Programming I believe - fancy name for software. Updates are released fairly regularly, I'd say about 10-12 releases in the last 3 years...

I also believe there are a finite amount of upgrades that can be applied but this is unlikely to be exceeded! (I think it's about 8-10)
