When I purchased my e60 in the UK I read all the documents very closely regarding MP3. In the UK brochure it explicitly descriibed professsional radio as a requirement for MP3 support only, not NAV. I think business NAV and above come with prof radio as well.
I only went for Prof radio.
Wanted Prof Nav and Bluetooth, but Bluetooth was more important and there was an incompatability issue with both so I went with BT.
So when I read this thread I am asking, is PROF radio installed ? May mean whether 16.1 and above will/not work with MP3.
Find out on Wednesday as my car is in Mon-Wed and I am providing info from this site so they know my full expectation the car plays MP3 when I get it back (although its mainly in to get the door seals fixed + oil change).

There was also word that MP3 may only be on CIP 17.0

Maybe 16.2 has it for Business Nav but for non-nav its on 17.0

What is marketed in Europe as "prof Radio" is standard in NA.

We are letting the car go into sleep mode and then rebooting the system in the morning. In the past, I have found that this is necessary to effect a full loading of the new software.

E60SPEED,

thanks, so this sounds definite that us poor souls who didn't shell out the extra for the "Prof" radio and don't have NAV should abandon hope of ever getting MP3 working then?

Everyting I have ever seen says you need "prof" radio to get MP3

Even on the 1 Series and new 3 Series you need "prof" to have it
It works great in a 1 Series by the way

My March 2004 530 goes in for the 16.x update on April 24. I was told months ago by my Indianapolis dealer that 2004 U.S. spec cars will never be upgradable to read MP3 files. I was hopeful, as has been the case before, that my dealer was mistaken. However, from reading this thread, I'm getting the uneasy feeling that he's right. So, two questions:

1- does anyone really know if the 16.x update will result in MP3 capability for U.S. spec cars (does anyone have any contacts at BMW N.A. that might actually know the answer?

2- since I really don't have any other problems, am I taking an unreasonable risk to get the software upgrade -- i.e., what's in it that's worthwhile if not MP3 capability?

I'm in the same situation as billybob. I would also like to hear the answers to his questions.

Bluetooth Fairy,

Thanks for recognizing yourself as a BMW tech. I believe there are more here in the forum, however for legal reasons, they participate clandestinely. If we have a minimum of a 100 members (anyone know how many) in the forum, BMW has over 4 or 5 million dollars worth of product in E60.net. Seems like they'd drop in and check in on us. But it's great to see someone like yourself taking a risk and setting a standard.

I'm not so concerned about MP3 because I use the MS wav format to copy. Fast copying, great quality, and you save a little space to add a couple more songs. But for the others, your help seems to help them greatly. I think you provided more information in one post then many of them have received from their own techs.

I just wanted to comment on your customer service. OUTSTANDING!

I wish more techs would do this. I know my dealer knows this board but they never visit it. (I showed it to them myself as a source for info)

This just in... One of my techs just completed New model training (E90 + E65). It appears that the face lifted E65 will have MP3 capabilities, but ONLY via the 6 disc CD changer. This is a different changer that has MP3 decoding hardware in it. What does this mean?? I'm not sure yet, but perhaps there will be a future upgrade available for E60's. As soon as I have any confirmed solutions I will let u guys know. Oh and I am not a Tech, I am a service consultant who just happens to love technology.
