When I open the ashtray flap on my car the cigarette lighter doesn't pop up. It seems to have got stuck in the down osition and I don't seem to be able to pull it up manually very easily.

How hard is it to get it all apart so I can see what's wrong with it?

MIne did the same but was fixed under warranty. Seems to be a fairly common issue since the topic shows up here occasionly. I use the 12v outlet that is above the passenger foot well more than the cig lighter so I don't break it again.

From what I've gathered here, this is a fairly common problem with no easy fix. The only fix I've seen mentioned is total replacement. G/L

What year is your car? Most E60s have an outlet under the dashboard, to the left.

My E60 is a 2003 car. I've not noticed an outlet under the dashboard but would love to find one there!

Edit: Just found this photo:

Will have a look in my car later. I really should RTFM!

Yes, that's where it is. Kind of a pain to reach, especially from the driver seat. You have to flip up the cover. G/L

Just to add...mine did this too however mine is easily pulled up. I got an ipod and FM modulator for Christmas and after about 2 days of use in and out of the cig. lighter, the whole metal piece of the lighter came loose and since doesn't spring up anymore. Sad to hear that there's no fix.
