Our check engine light is on.
In fact we started out on a 300 mile trip with everything fine.
First thing that happened--check engine light came on.
We checked the gas filler cap, and removed it; put it back on clicking several times. Arrived at our destination. When we left for the bmw shop the next morning, we saw the light was off.
On the way back (300 miles again) it came back on. We tried the previous method, to no avail and it's still on.
Any ideas?

Our car is a 2006 530 xit with about 75,000 klicks on it.

Regards,
DaveL

If you have a local auto parts place they can connect with ODBII and tell you what is wrong, within reason. Best yet, it's free(for the diagnostics).

Thanks for the quick response! I'll look for a friendly shop. Little bit different world here in the great snowy north. I'm not aware of parts shops offering this service.

My warranty is almost up...I should force myself to get back to the dealer...

Did the iDrive say anything?
Was it just increased emissions?

with 75K mileage... I would guess O2 sensor went south. O2 in BMW's I6 engine last longer then V8, but 75K is a reasonable time.

I am not sure autozone standard OBDII reader can read BMW's code or not.... ( suppose should be since it is a standard ).... Or time to invest a peake code reader.

If your car is driving fine and not misfiring, I'm sure it's emissions/exhaust related. I just had some weird solenoid replaced....no idea what that is....something similar to a muffler bearing?

Good Call!

Code's were read...here's the result...
WBANN7356CN>>>partial serial number

* check engine light on for 1 1/2 days (then went out)
* Nav died---pulled the cd out and it's a copy. Was when we needed guidance too.
On the way back on Sunday,
* False warning--flat tire (checked at service station, air in all tires. Topped up one I bled by accident with tire gauge; reset the tire pressure thing in the manual, and hit the road wondering whether we would make it.)
* Check engine (eng. block symbol) came on again. Went out Tuesday.

BMW dealer insisted I make an appointment. Car's there now. Just dropped it off.

But yesterday, I asked Cross Auto to pull codes. (they didn't erase them; just did screen capture and I have a copy.)

Here's what the data sheet from the logger says...
* Central Info Display--1 Faults
A468 External open circuit LVDS data line
* Gateway M-ASK-GW--1 Faults
E18F MOST ring: setpoint actual configuration does not match
Digital Motor DME-- 4 Faults
* 2C7E Oxygen sensor after catalytic convertor, trim control
* 2C2B Oxygen sensor before catalytic convertor, system check
* 2C31 Oxygen sensor before catalytic convertor, trim control
* 2C27 Oxygen sensor before catalytic convertor, system check

My concern is I don't know what the dealer is going to do. Warranty is up in 4,000 klicks. If they clean the contacts and send me down the road, I'm concerned I'll have to pay for new sensors soon.

So...I'm concerned!

Codes Read. Oxygen Sensors. Let's see what the dealer does now!

Please see post above for details.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

Stay tuned! Dealer problem. Going to need real help to resolve it.

I'll post when I can see straight.

Dealer didn't fix anything.
Now problems are back. Most frustrating.
So back to the dealer...right now not my favourite place to be.
