The trademark orange color of BMW dashboards is functional, not just cosmetic. That color has been proven to provide less eye strain while remaining visible in low-light conditions. The key is to prevent the eye's iris from closing so that nighttime visibility outside the car remains optimal. Whiter light will cause the iris to constrict which will affect how well a person's night vision is.
Also, if you've ever seen cars like VW and Audi that use a red color, you'll see that it doesn't work as well as the orange. At least for me, my eyes have a harder time focusing on the red in the dark but the orange, no problem whatsoever. I think the orange is sort of a blending of the benefits of red (no iris constriction) and white (good visibility).
If you have the chance, take a look at the color of airplane cockpit's lighting and instrumentation -- you'll see an uncanny resemblance to a BMW...
edit: Here's a link to an interesting article about the eye and night vision. It explains the concept of red lights and how they are difficult to see in some people but provide no degradation of night vision. Also, there is a paragraph that mentions cockpit illumination and how it's evolved from red to low-intensity white:

I don't want to sound pessimistic but I still don't think you're going to get everything changed to a different color for $100 US...
If you do, please post some pictures! Good luck!!
