check what software you have. if it's pre 25 then you'll be able to change colors (make it greyish, like in ne 5 ser) with software update.

There is a trick which will get you into some diagnostic screens but that will not actually be your version. The only real way I know of is to have the dealer check. If you have the same crap brown I do then don't bother, it's pre 25.
If you do decide to upgrade IDrive it's between 100 to 200 for labor to hook up the car and let it update for hours on end. I want to do this but can not justify the $$. The interface is also faste and font is smoother I have heard after the upgrade.

Yes mine is crap brown too. I don't understand why they make 90% of these cars with the horrible wood trim and that brown menu interface....classy my ass, it makes the car look old...

I used to have a crap Brown as well. I took my car in the other day for them to deactivate DRL and when I got the car back yesterday, iDrive's color is now Gray. The colors on the navi is a lot more clearer and define as well. They must have upgrade the software. Oh and the good part about this is that they did it for FREE. Well, I am not sure if they need to upgrade the software in order for them to deactivate DRL, but FREE nonetheless.
