Center console storage question

hey all,
I was thinking about that phone compartment in the center console and frankly, since I don't plan to use a phone tray, it seems like it just gets in the way. I was wondering if it can be easily removed?
Also, curses to BMW for not putting a 12v outlet inside...an AC vent, but no 12v...bad decision BMW
