my dealer wants $300 for a frickin' oil change. I'll do it myself for $90 in parts, thanks. just put in the 0w-40 Mobil1 on the approved list. technically I can get the BMW oil for about $1 less per quart at the dealer, but I wanted to try the Mobil1 and I like the extra range on the top since temperatures down here tend to run a little high.

15K miles oil change on Idrive isn't real miles driven.
Idrive count drops faster depending on how you drive (traffic, short distance, etc)
If you drive from Alaska to Miami then back then back again for full 15K miles, then I'm sure the Idrive will will match/be close to the actually mileage driven.
In my case 15K Idrive = 9K miles real driving.
I use German Castrol and change every 8500 real driving miles regardless of Idrive.

Completed my DIY oil change and used Castrol Euro Forumula 0-30W. As others mentioned, 0-30 for Castrol is the correct number. Would have gone with Mobil 1 but the Castrol was cheaper by $1 per quart. I suspect the BMW oil was made by Castrol.
BTW. The DIY was a snap with ramps. One thing. For the drain plug, make sure you hold on to it, as the oil drains fast. I've never seen oil drain (it gushes) so fast and the plug flew into the oil tray and slighly blocked its draining. It was like watching a toilet bowel almost spill over. Almost. Make sure to buy a 24MM socket for the filter housing too, its plastic and will easily strip if you use a wrench. Also, I'd warm up the engine when cold only for a bit. There is alot oil in the engine and it stay hots for awhile. Used a nice Mann filter and I liked insert type filter.
Overall, the 5er is tidy as heck down below and a pleasure to work on. Nice machine. Another oil I'd consider is Valvoline synthetic, a oil comparo had it performing better than Mobile 1. Overall, I'm not too concerned on the oil brand, as the change internvals will be 5K or before Winter/Spring.
Engine running smooth as glass. Next change December.
