Ok, so this afternoon I parked to go into a drug store. I came out about 10 minutes later and the car would not start, with or without the key inserted (I have comfort access). The I-drive screen said "ELV Error - do not attempt to turn off engine". Of course the engine was not on. So the computer seemed to think the car was on and driving. I tried to start the car several more times. I called the sos and arranged for roadside assistance and a taxi. While waiting, I continued to attempt to start the car. I left the car, locked it, waited 10 minutes, then tried again...nothing. Finally I stopped trying to start the car and made a bunch of phone calls (to reschedule my afternoon since I wasn't going to make my appointments). Then the taxi company called saying the taxi was there and looking for me. I tried one more time to start the car, and..... IT STARTED.

The car then worked normally for the rest of the day, stopped, turned off and on 4 or 5 times.

So now of course, I have no confidence in the car. Where and when will it decide to crap out on me.

Anyone have this happen? Any suggestions. I've already had a new ccc installed and a software update about 2 months ago.

If it happens again, try to disconnect negative battery cable to see how it goes.
Your problem is so new that I cannot recall any scenario like this since I join the forum.

My car did the same thing to me today but it said I needed to turn my steering wheel so I can start my car. I thought maybe it had something to do with my steering being locked which I dont even know if its possible on a car with AS. I turned the wheel while my car was off and it started thankfully. That is weird though.

Take the car to the dealer and have them run diagnostics to determine what error codes exist. That may provide some insight into what occurred and what might be done to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Happened on my 2006 550 with Comfort Access when I picked up in Munich. The car only had 4 miles on it. I wondered if it happened because I had driven with a different key than the one that was using at that time. I just moved the wheel, as a precaution got out of the car, locked it walked away so that I was not in the C/A range, walked back, the car unlocked itself, I inserted the key (as opposed to just keeping it in the pocket) and it started on first try. I wonder if it had something to do with switching the keys, or it truly was steering wheel position related.

I used the same key so I doubt its the key... Im thinking it has to do with the position of the steering wheel. If it happens again I'll have to take it to the dealer.
