we have property tax on vehicles here in colorado. 2.1% the 1st year and it goes down 1/2% each year. I got hit $1100 USD the 1st year on my 535.

In Texas, the following taxes (mandatory collection) are applicable:
1. Sales tax of 6.25% of sales price collected at the time your purchase (new or used)
2. Registration Fee - $67 a year
3. Emission/Inspection - $40 per year.
Got my E60 used so I was not subject to luxury tax

We pay "property tax" on cars on a yearly basis in Virginia. The tax is applied against the "assessed value" of your car and is a rate of $4.57 per $100 of assessed value.

we have to pay yearly registration fees (which include all those like license fee, tax etc.) here in California. It's increasing lately, because i just paid about $400

When I was paying car tax in the UK it was a big chunk of the value of the cars I had..hahaha
We have yearly registration which I think is about 70-80$ per year for my '05, based on the age of your car a little cheaper on older cars. On a new car you pay upfront and it is valid for 4 years.
We pay sales tax here in NJ (and some other states) on even used car private sales, you can't get registration unless you prove you have paid it! So if you buy the car from ebay you still have to go to the Motor Vehicles office and pay your 7%
Insurance used to be really expensive in NJ, I'm paying 850 something a year now.
Inspections don't seem as stringent as the MOT I remember, however the emissions tests are getting tougher, they are free at the state inspections stations which is nice!
