Hi,
my 530d is the first automatic i've had.
When I stop the car on a hill, foot break applied, put transmission into park, apply the handbreak and then lift my foot from footbreak the car moves forward a little.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or ways to get around this ?

DTC+ , when you push the brake all the way in or already approaching the hill at lower speed 1-5mph, you cna let the tacho fell to 0, or press the break all the way and no need for P nor handbreak.

The handbreak is the final thing to apply and it really keeps the car stopped, so the electronics of Steptronic in D and DTC+ engaged makes your car stopped at a "tilt" positin, if you apply some gas it start moving fwd, if you break again it stops, if all works well you stay there and do not roll off the hill bckwds, but this is an automated system so of course when you disengage the handbreak you let the car off... that is why E60 is moving a bit. Also the suspension is tighter when you stop the car, when you start it again, it lifts up, not like a Citroen though

Surely all cars do this, an inch or two of movement as the strain in the brake cables and settling of the suspension is normal.

Yup, mine does that even when it's level. My last auto whenever I reverse park I must shift to N (and the car was freed to move a bit) before I shifted it to park. Otherwise I would get a clunk sound from the gear the next time I shifted it out of P. Incidentally, the gear was from the same source as the E60. I am not sure if this is a "fix" for that problem though.

I think its normal to have a little slack for an automatic. If it really annoys you. Put the car "N", pull the hand brake, release the foot brake, then the car will rest only on the emergency brake THEN put the car in "P" that way theres no strain on the Transmission unless the hand brake fails or slips.

It's normal and you can't get round it.
