Hello,

I have 550i for a year and I haven't had any troubles with the car so far, but the only thing that annoys me is the engine hesitates when I quickly accelerate or hard press gas pedal from a stop position.

Is it the BMW design or something goes wrong with my car engine? Does anyone has this symptom with 550i?

Thank you very much in advance.

Its not the engine its the transmission, yes it is a known problem.

if you get it fixed you have worked a miracle.

In a nutshell, the car tries to move off in gear 2 to aid economy. When you press the gas hard the car tries to select first to apply the power you want, so there is a delay until that is selected, then the car takes off!

I had ZF send an engineer to test mine, apparently it is a 'feature' and within operating parameters.

I think it is shit software, but hey, what would I know.

I have this same symptom on my '04 545i... I noticed there is an SIB for something that sounds identical, but on the N54/N52K engined models and it's fixed by an EGS software update:

Not sure how to find out if there is a similar update for my car (and the 550i). KAF, did you look into this side of it when you were trying to get a fix?

1. Nothing to do with DSC.

2. Tranny reset makes no difference on mine.

3. The SIB seems to relate to this problem, but only in later models. If you are outside of warranty tough !! Also my car has this problem, cold or hot, the SIB 'claims' it is during warm up phase only. My arguements with BMW were in 2005/6, there was an update that claimed to address the issue...................it didn't!

I have to say I would be reluctant to buy a new BMW again, I would go for an Ex-demo so I could check it did not suffer this problem.

PS. Jaguar used the same gearbox and had the same issues................they denied them as well.

Had the same issue when I picked up my '08 550 this spring. After an update in June/July to the latest software, the "lag" is gone and has not returned (nor have I had to perform the transmission reset since) - it was like having a completely different car! Update also fixed a rough idle issue on cold starts and improved the interaction of my iPod with the 6FL interface - now remembers the artist/album/playlist you were on when you turned off the car. If you're under warrantly and can convince your dealership to update your car, it's definitely worth trying.

Prior to the update the software had not been updated since build date (03/07)
