Car at Dealer for Three Weeks Now
I need some advice on how to handle this please. I dropped my 2008 535i 45k mile at BMW dealer about three weeks ago. The car is still under CPO. I brought it in to see if they can figure out what’s causing a metallic clunking sound from under the car right after I crank the car up. It’s an intermittent problem that used to happen 1 in 10 starts but it seems to have become more frequent lately. Here is a video of the sound I am talking about (it sounds louder inside the car and I can actually feel the bang sometimes):
Dealer tried the software upgrade fix per the SIB 24 08 08 but it had absolutely no effect on the clunking sound. I made sure my SA and shop foreman got in the car with me and they both heard the sound loud and clear. Foreman knows the problem has been getting worse. The dealer has been responsive and they’ve given me a loaner so I am pretty happy with them so far. They are still not quite sure what’s causing the sound so they have initiated a technical case with BMW for guidance. SA said it might be a few days before BMW responds with proposed solutions.
I have a couple of questions for you guys:
1. Has anyone encountered a similar problem that wasn’t fixed with the software upgrade? Any guesses as to what may be causing this?
2. Foreman thinks it might be a transmission issue but he was reluctant to elaborate more because he wasn’t sure what BMW will come back and say. This is the part that concerns me. The car only has 6 weeks of CPO left. Is there anything I need to do differently to make sure I don’t end up getting stuck with a major problem after CPO runs out? So far, I have just been patiently waiting on dealer to take their time, 3 weeks, and troubleshoot.
Thanks.

You need to tell your dealer what you listed here. BMW is not known to be stinkers about an ongoing unresolved issue going past a warranty date.

Thanks, Abe. That's reassuring. I have sent all this information, including the video, to my dealer in an email/ The foreman suggested he might share the video with BMW to see if it helps troubleshoot.

They have it before your warranty is out so it's clear and I'm sure it's well documented. Even if they repair it and the noise returns later I believe all repairs are covered for two years. It just kinda sux they can't figure it out. Hopefully they gave you just as nice or better ride, if not I think I would be asking since they've had it so long.

Thanks for the replies. The ride they gave me is actually pretty nice, a brand new 528. It looks great and I love all the extra buttons in a 2014 car but I will take my 535 back all day long!

No power compared to twins
If you are under CPO, keep on them, they will have to cover all and you only have to pay your $50 premium.
And even after they fix insist and complain
Take advantage of the CPO
