I got the same message yesterday, so I just called that BMW NA. The agent who I spoke with was useless. He told me all the stuff I already knew, when the car was purchased, when the warranty expired, but most importantly he said, "your car (2004 545i with sport seats) is not affected by the recall, so take it to the local dealer and if they determine it to be the recall issue it will be fixed at no charge, otherwise you will have to pay for it." He kept repeating it about three or four times, like I am an idiot and would not figure this one by myself.

To me the car is affected since I got this message and it shows all the symptoms described in the recall. So I will see what the local dealer has to say, who happens to be BMW of Bay Ridge on 2nd Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, who during my last visit to do a wheel alignment (for which I had to pay, since the car is out of warranty) took the car at 9am and gave it back to me at about 2pm with the car pulling heavily to the left with centered steering.

I currently own 2 BMWs and had at least 2 more in the past, but so far, I am dissapointed in the way BMW NA is handling this and my local dealer. I was looking to upgrade to 2006 or 2007 M5 and get the new X5 as SUV, but with such service I will switch to CLS63 and ML or GL or whatever.

Well, my local BMW dealer located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, basically told me off. Somehow BMW determined that my car has no recall so I will have to pay for the fix out of pocket, which I am not planning to do. This is when my car has the exact problem as described in the recall. When I asked to talk to dealership's service manager, I was placed on a long hold and eventually hung up.
I will file a complaint with NHTSA and hope it gets somewhere. In the mean time I have to drive with the seat belt and airbag lights on.

Nothing helpful to add here. Called and got the same explaination as everyone else.

BMW will have a huge lawsuit on their hands if someone gets hurt in a collision that should have been recalled and wasn't.

I finally received the recall letter from BMW NA couple days ago.
Soooo, I think people who are included in this recall campaign should get the letters soon.

I had both lights on and took my car into the dealership, mind you that I did not receive the letter. Apparently my car was on the recall list because when the car was in the shop it was stablished that I had a deffected seat mat and they replaced it and it shows on my invoice a code for them to bill BMW for their service and parts for that item.

PS: Not to defend BMW, but the ball is in NHTSA's hand right now, the official final list will come from NHTSA not BMW. BMW provided them with all VINs of affected airbags that was placed on vehicles from that specific manufacturer and the final list will be forwarded to BMW for issuance of letters.

If you are under the warranty you can have it fixed even without the letter; however, without warranty you will need to wait for the letter. My 2 cents from experience and after making numerous phone calls...

I just had this dreaded restraint system malfunction. Although the "passenger srs off" light still goes off when passenger seat is occupied I am still worried if ever I have an accident and the passenger side airbags and seatbelt tensioner will not deploy/work. I will still need to check with my dealership if this is covered by the recall. And I hope it will be covered since I'm out of the factory warranty.

I just got the faulty code in my Idrive today. As you said, it's F*** annoying. My car is a 2004 525i and has over 110k miles, so it's way ***OUT OF WARRANTY*** and the guy said there is an open recall campaign and I have an appointment to drop it off tomorrow morning and get it fixed for FREE...

I ended up fixing it myself.

I checked the battery and in the window on battery's top had no light, which indicated low charge. So I replaced the battery, then had a buddy of mine reset the message, and it went away. I hope for good.

The "Pass airbag light" by sunroof button still sometimes goes on and off with a passenger, but it does not bother me as much as the fact that BMW would not fix it because my car is not part of their recall. This will deffinatelly impact my next choice.
