Can Someone Explain Re-badge logic?

My Ride: 2007 530i Sport Alpine White, winter package, comfort access, bluetooth, Satellite radio, tinted windows, Michelin Pilot Sports PS2s
I pulled up behind an E60 that was re-badged an M5. I don't understand the thought behind doing this. People who know BMWs can certainly tell it is not an M5 (especially without any other mods)...and others that don't know BMWs will not know what is an M5. Can someone please explain to me the logic behing this type of re-badge?

Some people that can't tell the difference might think it's an M5 because he put the badge on it...and the guy probably wants people to think it's an M5 for whatever reason.

Speaking of this topic, I saw a e46 today with a M5 badge on it. I tried to take a pic but the damn thing was fast, after all the M5 badge adds about 350BHP!
