Default Can I replace just 1 tyre?

My BMW E60 came back from a service and reported that the front left tyre had a deep gash in it (probably due to a pot hole) and would need to be replaced. Both front tyres have around 5 to 6mm of tread. I asked the dealer if it was ok to replace just one tyre and he said it was.

Assuming I keep to the same make/model of tyre, I just wanted to confirm if this is ok?

Sure, it's ok. You might notice a new feeling in the way it drives, but I am sure it will go away, or you will get use to it Then you will most likely be in the same situation when it comes time to replace the other tire. I've always been hopeful that I don't have to deal with it (yet) because it would probably drive me crazy.

I thought a new tyre tread depth was 7mm so if I did switch 1 then the diff would only be 1 to 2mm. Once the first tyre gets to the depth needing replacing then the other one would be far off so I'd probably change them as a pair.

Just seemed crazy to replace the non-faulty side when it had 5 to 6mm tread on it.
