Let me clarify...Please before for you stuffy types that get all bent out of shape worrying about what others do in the privacy of their cars or home.
I use my seatbelt religiously (and I'm not religious in anyway), but when I place my briefcase or some other heavy object in the passenger seat, the sensor detects the weight and sounds that alarm.

Same answer - plug the seatbelt in !
ie don't put heavy things on the seat - put them on the floor. Or if they are on the seat, wrap the belt round them as when you drive it like a BMW should be they will fly off the seat anyway

If you want to turn off seat belt sound off, there is a price to pay. You cannot listen to your radio since all alarm sound integrate with E60 radio system. To turn it off, make a relay switch to turn on remote-on wire of the amp in the trunk.
I don't recommend to do this because it's take time to do it. I'll post my pic later today to show you what I meant.

All of my past BMWs never chimed. Can this be programmed just to show the warning light?

Yes it is possible if you ask your service guy he knows for sure

Mine is disabled but I had too pay for it about 90$ :'(
Gentlemen -
This has been beaten to death, and I get tired of the "seatbelt police" lectures. I wear mine 95% of the time, but 5% of the time, I don't want to, and I'm not going to. The chime will quit after 90 seconds. If not, tell the SA you want a software upgrade.
