hmmmm

With the DSC system active, the active car can steer itself in a critical situation.

You can't turn the active steering off, just the DSC system.

From bmw.com:

If the vehicle is threatened with instability, such as by oversteering or braking on a changeable surface, DSC identifies the problem and can use Active Steering to help overcome it. For example, in order to reduce unsafe yaw, Active Steering can increase the angle of steering wheels faster than even the most expert driver.

I think that this is really saying that the A/S is used to slightly adjust the steering angle, if needed, when DSC is active and that it will not make that adjustment when DSC is off. However, I don't think that the speed adjusted variable ratio action of A/S is turned off with DSC.

dsc will not turn off active steering, it just turns off the "safety" portion involved with active steering. Active steering is still going to affect the steering ratios with the dsc turned off. Easy test; turn off dsc and then turn your steering wheel, how many rotations do you get? If you only get about 1 full rotation then active steering is still on, without active steering you should get much more then 1 full rotation before the wheels are fully turned.

Well...i turned off the DSC/DTC tonight and had few miles drive, the steering wheel definitely feels a little bit looser compared with DSC on,

but i am sure it didnt disable/deactivate the active steering.

I have drove quite of few other members E60s without the active steering as an option and it didnt feel like that at all.
So i can confirm the DSC off will not turn off the active steering, no matter how it said on the manual

I might be wrong i know but am quite sure the non active steering E60 doesnt feel like this at all

if i pull the fuse, would that cause an error message to pop up, that only the dealer can clear?

most likely, if I was you i'd check with the dealer first OR a really good mechanic to see how it actually works and what happens if it's disabled...

The AS is definitely disabled on my 2006 if you turn off DSC and DTC (hold the button as said above). It feels completely different and requires more lock to turn.

Unfortunately doing this also disables the cool "keep you from oversteering" feature, which is helpful on the way to work.
haha, +1. when i drive to work at 5 am and the roads are empty, i push my car on the exit ramp and the DSC provides an incredible amount of confidence.

Active Steering CAN be disabled, BUT not by simply switching off the dsc control. Heres how...

Locate your battery & disconect one of the cables (not the red one!)

Wait for 10 to 15 minutes.

Attached power back to battery and.....

Tada! when you next start the car you will see with all the ingnition lights a yellow coloured steering wheel with an " ! " next to it.

This means that the active steering has not been initialised.

According to the manual, once you reconnect the battery you have to initialise the active steering. To re-initialise it you have to start the car, turn the steering wheel to full left lock, then full right lock, then back to the center position. Switch the engine off, then restart the car and the active steering icon will disapear.

Hope this helps

Enjoy!
