I don't experience anything out of the ordinary. It could that the thing is powerful, once it goes it felt like you were standing still before. I just bought a 320cd for a salesman. That has turbo lag too, but it doesn't kick in as hard as mine.

(sorry about the awkward wording, not a native speaker and it's boxing day )

I have not noticed any problems like this when driving my car. I have, however, not compared it to an X5 3.0d, but they have definitely decreased the turbo lag from that of the old 525 tds, which behaves a bit like you describe. My guess would be that you notice a more pronounced turbo lag due to your lower compression, which might mean that you need more rpm on the turbo to take off...

No lag on mine after the ACS power unit install.

Maybe the problem is that you are "flooring the throttle" and thefore forcing kickdown (which takes time) - rather than just giving it 2/3 throttle, staying in gear and riding the torque...

I have to say that I can sense lag when start pulling from 1500 rpm and real kick comes in after 2500rpm. Though this can be felt most on third and fourth when try to squeeze in to tight gap in traffic . Just need to be carefull. That little lag is not so big deel to me.

Thanks for all of your input so far.
If there are other 530D owners reading this then please may I have your findings as well.

Hi,

here's another 530d owner.

I think there is no such large gap before accelerating, but I've read about this before in other forums and this should be a known problem.

Should be fixed with new software, don't know which version.

Probably a bit out of topic:

Since the last update (about Dec 20th) I have a similar transmission problem:

Before the update the connection of transmission and engine was very "close", means that the car stuck to the higher gear and accelerated from lower rpm (just as a diesel should).

After the update, the transmission almost always shifts down when lowering the throttle (even a bit) and works in higher rpm (in "D" mode; in "DS" even worse, of course)

Not very senseful as the diesel has its torque in lower areas.

Before it was a "sharper", more direct driving and acceleration seemed better.

Or is this now normal with the new software? (Dealer says so)

Ever noticed this?

Thanks

Hello streak,

I don't have the problems you describe. You have maybe hit the nail on the head with your thoughts on altitude and the effects of thinner air on the turbo's performance.

Is there any improvement in response at night? There should be as cooler air is denser and burns better.

My shifts are pretty damn good. It occasionally gets things wrong:

If I'm driving at say 35mph on cruise it will rightly shift into 4th. (Shifts into 4th at about 33-34mph, annoying for UK speed limits!) If I brake and it shifts down to 3rd and then resume speed it sometimes doesn't shift back to 4th. A little tap on the throttle seems to make it kick to 4th. It seems like it thinks it's still accelerating and keeps hold of the lower gear for better response...

When accelerating it will generally stay in gear unless you depress the throttle more than 'normal'. I never need kickdown because it kicks down appropriately anyway! IMHO

In terms of the lag I haven't noticed anything wrong, but I've only recently driven petrol and diesel turbo's and perhaps I'm used to it... Shifts seem quick (<0.5sec I'd guess) and the torque really comes in at about 2.5k rpm. Standing starts are good if you give it some stick. Only if you're slowing down and need to boot it does it sometimes take a second to spool up and blast

I rarely use DS because D is so damn good!
