A/C Auto recirculation
People have raved about the Auto-recirc feature on the e60. I dont think it works on my car. How does it work exactly? If it is turned on and a car with black smoke and smog coming out of the tail pipe is infront of me, te smell comes right in. I thought the sensor was supposed to stop these smells from coming in. Am i missing something?

When I first got my car, I rarely used the auto feature on the climate control/recirc....but after reading several posts here I realized what a great feature it is......I ALWAYS have my climate/recirc on auto and it's always perfect in the car.......and the humidity seems to be minimal. I never have windows fogging. The only time I mess with the auto is if it's really hot, and I need max cool air.......and I can't think of a time when I noticed smells coming through the car. You might want to have someone look at that.....it could be a faulty cupholder interface........NOT that I don't love these "cupholders" :bashwall:

My auto-recirc seems to work well and has worked well even in my E39s.
I notice it most when I'm driving in another car and smell the diesel fumes from buses and trucks...

Mine works seems to work well also, though I have noticed one interesting shortcoming. It does a great job on exhaust/deisel fumes. But in the parking lot where I park for work, right next door, on the third floor is the exhaust vent for the kitchen of the Hyatt hotel. Man, in the morning you can smell that bacon cooking, but the auto doesn't seem to shut off for that odor. Not bad mind you, I LOVE bacon, but it seems to miss some more organic odors. Again, does a great job in the city or on the highway with exhaust fumes etc.

Interesting, I always thought that bacon odor was coming from me!
I think there is some sort of particulate sensor on the car to determine when to activate the recirculate feature. I'm not sure what the physical makeup of different odors are, and I realize I'm stating the obvious here, but it's likely that the sensor isn't detecting the bacon "particles".
