According to BMW Manual does... probably because the driver doesnt shift at the most optimal point to "save gas" and SMG uses more gas probably because of the throttle blips on down shifts.
Step always upshifts and cruises the engine at 1.5k rpms and coasts a lot more so the car travels a futher distance without gas than manual... you cant "coast" in gear engine braking...
Manual and SMG had GGT. for the 550s and in 2004 I think it was also manual and SMG too.

There was no GGT on my 2004 545 6spd. Window sticker mileage was 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
