buzzing noise

Whilst washing the car today i have finally tracked down the buzz noise that occurs when you open any door trunk or heck even walk by the car. I raised the hood and tracked it down to a rectanular box by the plenum intake houseing, i placed my hand and a screwdriver next to it and it was just buzzing away. Does anyone know what is going on with this buzz. It sounds like some type of electric motor stepper or the like.
