Buying '05 545i with 86K.

All- thanks for the honest replys. BTW- this is not my first BMW. I had an '01 M5 that I bought new and traded a couple years ago for Nissan Titan (motocross transport). So very familiar with these cars service cost and frequet needs.
I went ahead and bought the car as my wife really love it and price was right. What the heck it only money and happy wife = happy life. Besides I would not be caught dead owning a Camry (no offense to millions of satified americans) but we wanted something with a bit more passion. I think 545 will do just fine.

if you want economical to keep you're better off with a 530 or 525. the V8 is prone to troubles. i'm not saying there aren't trouble free 545s out there; i'm just saying the likelihood is you're going to be shelling out considerable amounts of money for repairs. everything is much more complicated (i have a WK Grand Cherokee too, I can work on that one really easily) than on domestic cars.
the 6 cylinder cars are easier to work on (there's more room in the engine bay) and since there's common parts between them and the 3 series, you're more likely to find economical parts alternatives and solutions to common problems.

congrats! have fun with the demon-car you just picked up. I agree that you should really lay down some ground rules before you let your son whip around in it... these things are "creepy-stable" at high speeds and high g's - Ive been trying to find the limits of my suspension getting on on-ramps - and the fact that i cant hear tire squeal doing 85 on a 25mph reccommended ramp leads me to believe that one day im just going to completely lose control without any warning.
