Not an expert, but maybe a broken Cat? Not to worry, the warranty will take care of it.
While the car's in get them to update you to the very latest s/w version and get the bird's eye nav view etc.
May as well make it worth your while

Browellm,
Thanks for the reply...... As it happens I had already asked about the software upgrade ( this is a great forum !) Broken cat !!!!! Already!!!!!, I hope whatever it is is an easy fix ,although any problem is an inconvenience to me. moved to BMW from Audi (still own a TT though) in the hope of avoiding non service trips to the dealers.
When I got the car I was getting 35/36 mpg. is that about what I should be getting ?

With all that speed and power the consumption will have to give a little. Lets face it nobody buys a 530d for economical driving if you want economy you buy an Audi A6 with 95hp or there abouts.

If you got 35/36 mpg out of the 530d you must have only been just dabing the pedal or it was all motorway/high speed motoring. A general mix of driving should give around 30 - 33 mpg.
I don't know whether you read any car mags over last 6 months but one of them was slating all the manufacturers diesel mpg claims as being way over the top.

This has been discussed a few times, but specifically with the 535d.
It seemed to be the consensus that it was some type of chemical on the engine burning off or some part of the engine burning in.
Mine has gone away for the most part, but I have smelled it on occasion. Just not nearly as bad as the first few times.
