I've had my 535d since June 2006 but must confess that I have never smelt this before. For the ast 2-3 days whenever I turn the car off and walk away I can semall something burning. It seems to be coming from the exhuast but I can't see smoke, it's just a smell.

Any ideas as to what it is? Could it be the particulate filter going? There are no errors or messages on the idrive at all.

Any help appreciated as I know if i take it to a dealer they wont have a clue without an drive error message.

You're right...

It's the particulate filter cleaning process

Have a good weekend!

Yes - in the cleaning process it's normal.

When you drive and the cleaning process begins, you'll notice that the gearbox is performing a downchange, too increase the rev's and the burning process starts.

When you turn off your car in a "cleaning process" it's quite normal that you'll notice a smell from your exhaust (and your exhaust tips are hot as h***).

I always have a burning smell coming from the car.... but that might be related to my driving style .
It's true that the 535d smells weird from time to time but that's normal.
In the winter I even have smoke coming from the front, but that's moisture in the intercooler/radiator .
