For the last few days i have noticed an accrid burning rubber smell whenever i got out of the car. It appeared to be coming from the rear of the car, and i obviously suspected my new wheels were rubbing on something.

Further inspection revealed nothing - but then i noticed the smell was coming from the exhaust pipe!!

I then had a man-type "good old stare" (as we do) and noticed some kind of flap up the inside of the rear silencer pipe, which appears to be stuck open.

My question is.. what's the flap, and any suggestions as to the burning rubber smell? Obviously the car is under warranty - but my dealer is a master of BS, so i'd like to be pre-prepared before i approach him..

Many thanks

Lee

That's the butterfly valve. It's usually closed when driving normal. Once you drop the hammer and go WOT (wide open throttle) the valve opens. With the valve stuck in the open position, you've probably lost some low end torque. Does the car feel a little sluggish lately starting from a stop?

It does actually! It feels a bit "confused" when pulling away too - like the gearbox isn't quite sure what day it is!

PS - Any ideas on the burning rubber smell ??

Is this the stock exhaust or aftermarket?

VT,

With aftermarket straight pipes or any of the other aftermarket brands, does this valve exist? If not, does not mean the the car will generally lose some low end torque? Also, does your mpg get affected with the mod exhaust system?

Most aftermarket exhausts do not have the butterfly valve. The only one that I know that does is Eisenmann for the 545/550. There is a noticeable loss in low end torque with aftermarket exhausts but the trade-off is that you gain top end horsepower. With a setup of a cat-back exhaust having a x-pipe and silencers (mufflers), a la RDSport, no low end torque is lost and there is still a gain of top end power. I have noticed that my mpg has decrease on average but it's b/c I tend to wind out 1st and 2nd gears a lot these days. I love to hear the sound of my exhaust.

9 LEE,
Sorry, I haven't the foggiest idea why your exhaust has the burning rubbing smell.

Hi Lee,

Did you notice any change in the sound of the engine/exhaust? I mean, like it suddenly sounds like a big V8 motor, and also feels a bit like you're driving with the handbrake on?

If so, could be the periodic buring off of the carbon deposits from the particle filter in the exhaust system. Certainly when my car was new, it smelt bad when this happened, a real chemical like smell that stuck in the back of your throat. I thought my aircon was knackered or something like that.

Seems to happen every couple of hundred miles, and lasts for 20-30 miles eachtime I think?

Simon.

Hi

It's been like this for about 150 miles and smells exactly like when someone has done a tyre-burnout or a rubber belt in the engine is smoking. However, the smell is without any doubt coming from the tailpipe outlet!

I have noticed when i have just come off throttle then gently accelerate at lowish speed that it 'stutters', and also it seems a bit devoid of the power it used to have when i first got it 2000 miles ago.

I went down to the dealer this afternoon, and spoke to Mr B/S the salesman. I explained the problem and this was his reply...

"aaah, yes sir - i know about this. On the back box there are two butterfly valves, and one is permanently open and the other one only opens when you go on full throttle"

My reply...

"well, what's the point exactly of a butterfly valve that's permanently open?"

Answer

"i'll have a word with the mechanics in the morning"

You've got to love 'em eh?

Actually, my 530d suffers from a slight hesitation between 1800-2000rpm. I can accelerate out of it, and also acceleration from below through to the redline is nice and smooth. But sometimes I can manage to 'hold' the revs at around this point as I'm driving, and the car get very jerky.
The stealership in Newport couldn't find anything wrong, and after 2 soft updates plus a remap, it's still there.

Just guessing, but would the second butterfly only close when its in the 'burn-off' process of the particle filter?
