I would also suspect the valve cover gaskets. Most of the time, they start to leak in the back of the engine (in the lower corner). Oil is dripping directly on the catalytic converters causing that oil burning smell.
It is pretty hard to see that leak from the top. You need to remove that metal reinforcement plate under the engine and see if there is some oil on it. Then you have also some access to see the valve cover from the bottom.
That job on 545i and 550i is pretty expensive ? it can run anywhere from $1300 to $2300+ (depending if you want to replace the spark plug tubes and upper chain cover gaskets).
