I have a very similar symptom (intermittent faint smell). BMW tech from dealer verified it was the valve cover gasket. He said it was very common across several e60 engines.

just noticed that smell when i stepped outside my car yesterday, then i noticed some smoke coming out of the engine..it was hard to see but i noticed it, then i opened the engine and i couldn't find where its coming from, but i think it was coming from the engine towards the bottom near the passenger side...i think it might have been oil leaking onto something very hot and burning off....my 04 530 is slowley starting to give me problems....
