Mission accomplished no fuss no muss.. i dont know what they did but it did not require a new part and i was able to take off within 45 minutes.. my faith has been resolved. coming from a range rover sport, i didnt realize how fun it was to merge onto a highway and i have found myself taking the long way home into manhattan tonight... thanks for all your help guys
Glad to see it all worked out great at the end. Have fun with your new car and drive safe.

Hey, hold off on the spinach diet for a while, ok?

that must be a record breaker, but you can be sure they'll do anything to make it up to you, use it as a bargaining tool...

Just wanted to add my own experience on this topic:

Had exactly the same issue on my '07 530d a couple of months ago. Except it was my 4yr old son who pulled the handle "out, not up"!!
As the car's less than 3 years old, my dealer said it was covered under warranty, but the handle would have to be ordered from Gemany pre-sprayed in the right colour. ("As it's an Individual colour, this would take longer.......")
Couldn't open the door for over a month from outside, and when it eventually went in to be replaced, they had received a handle from Germany - but in primer!!!!! Told me it could be another couple of months wait for one in the right colour. Refused to spray a primered handle as it was "a warranty job so BMW UK won't pay us to spray it".
After a few choice words were exchanged about their policy, I insisted they fit the primered handle as a temporary measure, at least making the door usable. So I'm currently with a primered handle on my car, waiting for the correct colour handle to arrive from Germany.
Been 2 and a half monthssince this saga started. Never had a problem with the dealer before, but I'm really not impressed by the service this time.....
