I love driving my new 545, but I hate the fact that I have to take it easy with this V8. I find I just want to stick it in DS mode and let her rip. Do I really have to wait until 2000 km.?

I am now at 370 km. How important is the break in period and what would really happen if I cheat a little?

If you let it rip for once at 1500 I am sure it can't harm. I think the first 1000 km cover like 90% of the break in

BMW enigines don't NEED a brak-in, but it's BETTER to follow the brake-in rules.

you are not only breaking in the engine, but other parts of the drivetrain as well.

Are you keeping the car long term? It is my understanding that not breaking it in will manifest itself as problems when the car gets beyond 100K miles.

I don't have any idea what improper break in does in the long haul. Obviously it doesn't hurt in the short run, the dealer demos can attest to that. I don't need to know. The manual gives break in instructions and for the price I paid, taking care of the car is significant to me. My son has my old 540 at 98+k now and it is operating flawlessly. It was also broken in by the book.

I NEVER break in any of my vehicles. Or I do, depending on what you call break in

Just ride/drive it like you stole it. Works for me.

As a matter of fact, there is quite some controversy on the subject. I'll get the ball rolling:

BREAK IN FOR CAR / BIKE ENGINES

Well it's quite a new approach to me.
Look forward to see what the more technical people on the board have to say about this since I couldn't tell you..

I guess it depends on how long he plans on keeping the car. Also makes a point out a danger of purchasing a used car or (especially) motorbike.

Personally, I respected the 4500 rpm limit but made sure I drove it often at all engine speeds up to 4500 which meant a lot of DS and Manual shift mode. I found this no problem and there was plenty of fun below 4500.
