But I should have mentioned I complained about swirls in the paint, so they gave me a complete detailing for free.
oh, boy! $80 for oil change and complete detail? that's a steal ! btw, who "created" the swirls?

Re break-in time; BMW knows their engines. By driving with various speeds in the break-in, the wear patterns will be established early in the life of the engine. After this, the rate of metal wear will be reduced and the surfaces get a polish. Valves, cam lobes and rings should be broken in after 5000 miles but gear teeth in the trans and differential will take longer. Break-in isn't just about miles or hours run but also temperature cycles from starting and stoping the engine. When cold, wear is higher but as the engine warms up, parts get more loose. So break-in partly depends on cold running time. This would weather related. I'd say a year of daily use will truly break all the drive train in. Technically, 1200 miles is good enough, but the engine is still tight enough to reduce gas milage and not perform optimally when cold. My engine is noticably quieter and smoother now, at 5000 mi than when new.

I keep my cars 10 or more years. I spend months looking at cars before I buy. I love the 5 but constantly worry about the electronics. As much as I love computers, they don't have to operate at 50 C or -20 C while bouncing on the road with the weather.

I heard the i drive screen might not work if too cold temporarily. Anybody have that problem?

Also, what kind of display is it in the dash over the steering, orange characters, OBC? LCD?
