I have heard many different opinions, and am curious what you all think. I am at 1600 miles, and just scheduled a break-in oil change for next week (will be around 2000 then). My SA said I didn't need it, but I decided to do it anyway. I will then change every 7500 or 1500...haven't decided yet. What do you think???

If you do a search, this topic has been well covered.

I always change the oil/filter after break in. Had mine changed at 3,000 miles. And even though recommended change interval with synthetic is 15,000 miles, I change every 7,500 miles (and pay for the out of service change--tell them not to reset the service indicator).

Same here.
I had the oil changed at 3000 , I just felt better about it , being a V8 and all.
Cheap insurance I guess.

I took out my break-in oil at 13 months. Never added any during that period. Oil still looked great.

I just feel better not going 15,000 miles. Try this before you get your next oil change. Take the dipstick out and rub it on a piece of white paper. Do the same after the oil change. Compare the 2--the new oil is so much lighter and cleaner. And I've only compared 7,500 mile synthetic to new--I can only imagine how 15,000 mile oil looks. But I've always admitted I'm obsessive about my cars...

I also had the oil changed at 2500 miles. Better safe than sorry, it's not the SA's car and most of them don't have any car knowlegde, they are mostly typist and yes men.
It's worth the money, you don't want to regret anything on a 50K investment.

I just had the oil changed on my car. I did it with a little bit over 3K miles on the engine. Especially the break-in period is important to me. So I paid for the oil change. From now on, though, I think I will just go with the regular maintenance schedule. Meaning whenever the car says it is time for an oil change. They also did not re-set the service indicator.

On the down side. It cost me $126 bucks for the oil and filter change, which I thought was a little steep.

I changed mine at 2,900, then at 7,900. I changed it myself, so I was only out the oil and filter. My wife is taking it in on Friday for it's first "Official" Oil Change, as the Service Light has come on at 11,200 miles. Oil Change is due at 12,000, according to the computer. I just couldn't go the 12,000 without a change.

We own the car, not lease it, and typically keep our cars for a long time. So, for me, the extra insurance of an oil change is worth the extra $40 bucks in Oil and filter.

I cut my first filter apart and lots of little shiny things were trapped in it, due to break in. Was much better during the 2nd Oil Change.

Yes, I am obsessed about my cars and yes, I keep a spreadsheet on gas mileage, oil changes, etc.

To each his own.

Regards,

Michael

Thanks everyone for all the good info. I too, am a bit obsessive about my cars. I will change at 2K, and then likely stick to when the car says I need it (unless it's too hard to go that long). At what mileage are most of you finding the car will tell you it's time to change the oil?
