I called my dealership because my 05 545i service indicator is telling me that my front brake pads need replacing. He called me back and quoted me around $700. Is this correct (from dealership)? That's just the front? Good thing my rear ones are not due until another 28,000 miles!

Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

That $700 quote is b/s. You can source ALL FOUR rotors and pads for your car for less than that. even if you only do the front, parts and labor should be under $500.

There's DIYs on this site. I'm sure some of the vendors here would be glad to help you with parts.

If that price is for pads only then it is really high- even from a dealership. I did the work myself on all four wheels- pads and rotors- for about $500.

That quote should be pads, rotors, and sensor. I'm the warranty admin at my dealership and we rarely quote out pads and sensor without rotors due to the lip the rotors get. Since we don't "turn" rotors, we quote them out. The break-down is around 250 labor, 250 rotors, and roughly 200 for the pad "repair kit" and sensor. Labor IS high due to the amount of money the tech makes + how much the dealership had to spend for that tech to be a certified BMW technician etc. etc. Earlier posts are right, if you feel confident enough to do it yourself and have the time, DIY! Otherwise trust the techs and master techs at the dealership who have probally done several so far that week and know what they are doing. Not to mention (at our BMW center) all parts and labor have a 2 year unlimited mile warranty.

+1 You should get what you pay for! If it seems a bit high - ask for a customer loyalty or BMWCCA discount.

The R&R probably includes (or should) a brake fluid flush. The 2 year coverage offered by BMW service centers adds some peace of mind. It also helps ensure the shop gets the job done right the FIRST time. Repeat fixes come out of the shop's profits!

Yeah, I was quoted $1,350 for all four wheels (includes rotors, pads, and sensors). I've decided to upgrade and get R1 drilled/slotted rotors and hawks from acute performance and install them myself. Going to save me over $600.

My front pads, rotors, and sensors will need to be replaced in about 2k miles and the dealer in Sherman Oaks, CA quoted me around $800.00. SCV German Car Service located in Santa Clarita, CA quoted me around $600.00 parts and labor. That's a $200.00 savings and they're a reputable service center for German cars.

It's the price of the oem rotors that is killing you.
