Brake Service Indicator

Hi all, I am getting a bit worried about my brake service indicator, it has been on 6000 miles for the rear and 15000 for the front for quite some time now ..several weeks and I put about 600 miles a week on minimum.
Does anyone know if this is supposed to update in real time or does it only update in intervals...for instance, I wouldn't get a different reading until it was 3000 and 7500 or something.
Either way brakes are in my near future but it would be nice to know how that functions.
thanks,
mike/

Pads should last a very long time unless something is misaligned or front/rear bias is adjusted incorrectly.

Its all down to the driving style. computer can only go on what is programed and then learn a bit as it where. But at 50k miles i take it there well on teh way to being replaced and possible new set of disks as well mate.

I'm at 57K now, which is why I find the 15K left on the front rather dubious.....In my experience, I also find it rare that the rear brakes would wear faster than the front,
unless they were thiner to start with. I already picked up the pads so I guess I might as well go ahead and replace this weekend.
I will be curious to take a closer inspection of the rotors and the wear on them. A friend was charged about 1400.00 for brake service at just about 50K, the dealer refused
to do just the pads, saying that the rotors BMW uses are very soft and wear out at the same time the pads do.

My last two german cars went 70K + on the fronts. I never had to replace them before trading. My rears went faster on my last car, but VW had incorrectly set the front/rear bias at the factory.
I'd say the statement about rotors is accurate - it's rare to see someone re-cut rotors these days. Besides - do you really want thinner rotors? They'd warp a lot easier, which would cause more squeaks and brake shudder.
