If you have a faulty brake sensor does that mean its not detecting brake pad wear correctly? Today a friend of mine says my squeaking is due to faulty brake sensor, I've also noticed that my brake wear on the iDrive have stopped decreasing for awhile now, is it because of the brake sensor. There's a possibility that my brake pad is completely gone but my iDrive didn't detect it!! Please help!!

I don't think there is a problem with the sensor doing it's job sensing the pad wear, I think the problem is simply a design flaw which causes the sensor to scrape against the rotor and make noise...

My SA has confirmed that the brake squeal is due to a faulty design on the brake sensor that makes it scrape against the rotor.
They have told me I have to live with the noise until BMW redesign the brake sensor otherwise they will be changing the pads ever few thousand km's.
Personally I think their attitude stinks.... Why should I live with the noise?

Sensor has been updated see SIB below:

Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes Service Measure B34 202 03 dated July 2003.

SUBJECT
Brake Squeals

MODEL
E60 (5 Series)

E61 (5 Series Sports Wagon)

E63 (6 Series Coupe)

E64 (6 Series Convertible)

SITUATION
Some customers may complain of a brake squeal noise during light brake application.

CAUSE

Wear sensor geometry (part of the sensor head protrudes beyond the edge of the brake disc).

Wear sensor material (the material combination of the wear sensor/brake disc can cause squealing noises under certain circumstances).

CORRECTION
In case of a customer complaint, install improved brake pad wear sensor. Improved wear sensor geometry and material have been implemented in 01/06.

PROCEDURE

Determine that the noise is not caused by random occurrence which can happen just before the brake pad wear limit is reached.

Replace the brake pad wear sensor and new brake pads only on the noisy axle.
