I went down to Boston for the weekend and left my car parked in a garage for 5 days. On my return, the brake pedal was rock solid, wouldnt move at all when I pressed it to turn the key...once the car started it became soft again. This happended again this morning. Car drives and brakes fine otherwise. Is this normal?

Cheers

I'd say it's pretty normal. It happened to me on my old car and I'm pretty sure it's happened on my new car. Others have also mentioned it in the past so for now, don't worry...

I remember seeing a few threads on this "hard brake at start-up" Like rudy says it's seems to be normal. I remember one thread about having the tech/SA check out a valve or vacuum pump or something. I also experience this hard brake pedal on extreme hot days, or when it gets cold at night. I mentioned this to my SA and shop foreman as well and he also mentioned checking a valve or vacuum as well when the car gets dropped off again. Seems to be known issue....

Brake booster valve might be leaking.

The hydraulic fluids need to be moved on for some 5 secs after a weeks stand still.

My car has electronic steering and a battery that gets force from braking.
Also the generator stops at full throttle and I have a turbo engine with intercooler.

But all this works fine even if the car stands still for a week or two.

A brake flush every second year - plus a small brake service will do good.

sometimes this happens to me... after Friday night we usually drive my wife's car for the entire weekend... when I go to work on Monday morning after the weekend, my brake is stiff on initial startup... fine after that...

Also, as was mentioned before, it could be relative to the cold weather that's now blanketing the North East of the USA/Canada. I too have experienced this when it's been very cool (colder than normal operating temp especially in the past few days); and this will happen. We've had record cold temps here in Orlando as of the last couple of days.

[Not Relavent ]But, being that I've got heated steering and seats, I've really enjoyed the cool weather...

My .02 cents.
