Hello everyone,

I am planning to replace front and rear brake pads due to to wear on my BMW 550i. During my search on this forum I found several options for brake pads, but could not clearly decide what is the best product. My selection criteria is:

1. Stopping Power (1-5, 1=worst, 5=Best)
2. Low Noise (1-5, 1=worst, 5=Best)
3. Low Dust (1-5, 1=worst, 5=Best)

The pads I am trying to decide upon are:

1. OEM
2. Mintex (orange box - street pads)
3. Hawk HPS
4. Akebono Euro Ceramic
5. Your recomendation...

If you guys can help me rate these on a scale of 1-5 per the above criteria, I would appreciated it. This may also be helpful to others trying explore these products. And vendors, you are welcome to chime in!

Thanks!

Hi,

Here's my recommendation.

Hawk HPS if you want the best stopping power to noise to dust ratio.
Posi Quiet if you want the least amount of dust and noise but are willing to sacrifice breaking power.
OEMs have high dust, low noise, and breaking power is in between Hawk & Posi.

Let me know. I can get you any of those brands.

I would have to agree with Posi-Quiet's description above. Very low dust but I'm somewhat disappointed in the stopping power. When I slam on my brakes I get a spongy feeling I didn't get with OEM pads.

Would anyone else please share their opinion of the Hawk HPS pads. I am trying to convince myself that this is the best choice. Seems that a lot of members have them.

I used the Hawk HPS pads on my 04 CTSV. They reduced brake dust significantly and performed well at the track. I highly recommend these pads and plan to install on my 550I when needed.
