Haha. Kind of like job insurance. Why offer then best when you can save it for later. I bet the perfect software version will come out the year that ever E60 is out of warrenty. (4 years after the last e60 production)

Its an option that has to be enabled by the dealer; cars sold in the UK ( and I suspect the EU ) are disabled because it requires a change in the law to allow for BFD. Type Approval regs don't permit BFD type lights.

The rule changes were/are supposed to be imminent, but neither my wifes' M3 convertible? ( 8 weeks old ) nor my 535d ( 4 weeks old ) have BFD enabled. I've tried both with an 'emergency stop' from 30MPH, no BFD.

Dealer won't switch the feature on, he says because of Type Approval.....

The EU approved it at the start of 2004. I had mine activated back in April/May last year after a few visits to my dealer. I believe I was the second person to have it done in the UK as our E60s were produced before the EU approval got through. Yes its works as I've tested it.

All E60s in the EU produced after January 2004 have BFD activated.

Thats good info....I guess this means back to the dealer, BFD definitely not working on mine.....I just hope I don't need a software upgrade....BFD gets fixed, something else stops working....

When I had mine done last year, I did have a software upgrade done with it to Version 12 (so a long time ago). Make sure you get the technician at your dealer to go to a retrofit section and update the Light Module section. That's what they did on mine anyway. Have change though as its been a while.
See the following link which I raised last year (last page), it might come in useful.

Mine is a March 12, 2004 build- USA car. I have tried numerous times, apply the brake hard so tires chirp and ABS is engaged and many other stopping configurations- The supposedly additional lights never came on. I have had numerous software updates since and I think I am running v16.2 or something close, so maybe it works now but now I don't care anymore.
