You didn't mess anything up.
I do it all the time. In heavy traffic on expressway, I put it in DS
to take advantage of engine braking.
right, 6th gear will not engage in DS

My Ride: (USA) 645Ci, Silver Gray, Chateau, Cold Weather PKG, Premium Sound PKG, Sport PKG, Step, NAV [Std Equip in 645], HUD, Satellite (SIRIUS) Radio, Aux Input, Bluetooth enabled using iPhone 3GS w/ adapter cradle - Build date - 01/05, Baby delivered 2/24/05
I do that sometimes as it is still so quiet that I cannot tell from teh engine sound that I'm still in 5th gear. One of the reasons I wish HUD had the gear info on it. But no, no harm to systems, just pocket book

DS is the sport driving mode with the steptronic transmission. has more agressive shift points and locks out 6th gear.
You didn't hurt your car one bit. You could drive in DS mode all day for the life of the car and not hurt it. Some people have even tested their mileage doing this and found only a small difference.
The sixth gear engages in either mode after 60mph. Perhaps you have an old program and need a refresh from BMW. I drive in DS all the time and 6th gear is engaged everytime. I dont see much of a difference as far a MPG while in the HWY, in the city I see the difference as it holds the gears longer and 6th does not engage unless I'm going over 60mph.
I'm quite sure that 6th gear is locked out at all speeds in DS mode, at least it is in my 2005 545i. I hit 120 MPH on the freeway this morning and didn't get into 6th.

My Ride: I have a 2004 E60. It was registered in January 2004. It's a Black Sapphire 530i SE with a few options:
- Auto-dim interior + folding exterior mirrors
- Automatic gearbox
- Bi-Xenon headlights
- Bluetooth
- Leather interior (Black-Dakota)
- Navigation system - business
- Service inclusive
- Sport steering wheel
- Star spoke 124 8Jx18"/9Jx18" + run flats
- Top tint windscreen
- BMW 6-CD autochanger
- Supagard paint treatment
- BMW carpet mats
Perhaps a dumb question! How do you know which gear you are in when in 'D' or 'DS' mode? I have a 2004 E60 and cannot get it to tell me which gear it is in. Do you just go by the revs versus the speed to figure out the gear you are in?

Mine 530i is in 6th at highway speed in either mode.
To answer Taz's question, while driving in DS mode, shift the lever toward you and you'll see what gear it's in. But the gear you see is one gear above the one you drove in DS.

Are you sure the 6th gear is locked out? I drive in DS most of the time and I'm sure that the rpm when over 60 is the same in DS or D.
If you're counting the shifts from launch, you may only count 5 gears...because you're in 2nd gear from the start..unless you give alot of gas or starting uphill between 0 and ??...then it will shift to 1st.
