Well, it may be OK on a straight line with a cabrio E46 M3, and probably it will leave the first US E36 M3 (240 bhp) behind, but on the twisties and/or with a proper body/engine combination it has no chance
Well if you want to put conditions to suit a particular vehilcle's characteristics on the toasting event - how about making it a race over 500 miles!!

a 545 or 550 toast the old E36 M3. The 545 will almost hang with a E46 M3 on the highway because of the V8 grunt. but a 2004 530 with "about the same power" is too heavy and the car isnt optimized to run with the E36 M3 Maybe the 255hp 530 will do better but I'm not sure. a 535 will toast it when it comes out. Probably even toast a E46 M3
I like toast...especially with peanut butter

I thought there were some threads on here on how to lighten the weight of an e60...

Happy to. You and I have the 535d's. Now we need someone with one or more M3's of different vintages. My bet would still be on the M3 if the race is anything but endurance on motorway at 90 mph.

What I was trying to say is that the Cabrio M3 is a compromised vehicle, and that the early 240 bhp US M3 is not worth very much. An EU-spec M3 coupe (or even a saloon) will beat a remapped 535d on the straight and on an agility course and on a real road. Unless - as I said - you are racing at 90mph on a motorway. But then, a 520d will beat the 535 at that. Just make the race 600 miles. One pit stop is all it takes.

Re: lightening the E60. The most recent thread seemed to conclude that the biggest weight saving - short of going boy racer and dropping some fairly unessential creature comforts (electric everything, a/c etc.) - was a diet for the driver...

"Funny, because a stock or remapped 535d won't toast a 545"
Oh no, let's keep that thread buried. If anyone is interested do a search and you will find a lively discussion about the 535d vs 545i.

Really.
Since the 535d holds up with a 545i as shown ad nauseum on UK Top Gear (crap/good drivers notwithstanding) it seems that you are implying that a remap of a 535d shows insufficient performance improvement to then outperform a 545i.

I haven't seen that comparison hence my "Really?" question.

Would you care to share the basis if your rather unequivocal view? It may save those who would like to go down this route some dosh.

The 535d/545i race is available somewhere online. I will try to find it if of interest.

Here it is: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...23633657404315

PS Sorry Only just noticed that there was a request not to have this discussion again!!

I'm sure we all think we've done the 535 and 545 topic to death!!!! I was interested in the suggestion that a remapped 535 will "toast" an E46 M3 (post #6), as I wouldn't expect a 545 to be able to do that (coupe, the cabrio isn't as quick)!!
