If there's minor damage, they'll fix it at the VPC/VDC and it'll be good as new. (You'd be surprised how many cars are damaged in transit that are taken care of at the prep center.)
Are they saying you have to wait another month because they're going to put it on another ship from Georgia to the west coast or is it going to be transported via a ground carrier? (I assume they're not going to build you a new car -- that would only make sense if there was extensive damage...)

The April '08 edition of Car and Driver reported that a ship carrying M3's and 1-series to the US listed and damaged over 370 cars.

At the VPC, they have a full body shop capable of repairing a car to perfect factory specs. Unless the damage is MAJOR, they'll repair it there and you'll never know the difference...
