Default On-board monitor / CIC system BLACK

Hi all, thanks for taking the time.

Got in my car last week and the systems monitor (I.e., nav screen, etc.) was black/blank.

I attempted to reset the CIC by holding the power button in (for progressively longer and longer times) to no avail. I really didn’t hear or see anything indicating a reset, but regardless the screen stayed black/blank.

Checked about 15 fuses inside the glove box, none in the trunk yet.

Maybe something has just simply died, but considering all the components, I’m wondering how to narrow it down.

ANY help will be greatly appreciated since this pretty much eliminates hearing/cooling, nav, radio, almost everything that makes driving a pleasure (except the POWER!!)

V/r

Sounds like the CIC, but you really need a code reader that reads BMW specific (module) codes.

I concur. You want to know for sure before buying something you may not need because it can be a bad screen also.

In ISTA you can connect to the screen separately from the CIC unit and you can have it display red, green, and blue (something like that, I believe to scan for dead pixels). Try that and see if you get anything. Also, if the backlight failed the LCD would still be generating content but you won't see it, try shining a bright flashlight on it and see if there is anything being displayed. Do you still get audio, door chime, etc? That would tell you if the CIC unit is still at least doing something.

Thanks, but unfortunately I don’t have ISTA. I will check into your other suggestions… (trying to remember if I’ve heard the door chime or not. Definitely no stereo (music, etc).

Update! Good news… I went into JB4 via the steering wheel controls and changed a setting. When I exited, the CIC came back on, radio playing, etc.
Apparently, the JB4 had somehow activated the “radio off” feature of the CIC, or somehow I did it myself, inadvertently.

Anyway, I’m a happy man. Thanks to all who gave input, much appreciated!
