Had a race tonight with A E46 M3 convertible. I pulled up next to him at the light. (I saw him racing already when he came on the road from a side road, and he was hitting it obviously) The M3 was a manual gearbox but the guy knew how to shift.

Through first gear I pulled half a car length, and through 2nd I gained a little more so he was one car length behind. This stayed the same all the way until we reached 180km/u until we needed to brake for the next light. It looked like that above 100 to 180 the performance was EXACTLY equal, was a pretty funny sight.

The look on his face was priceless and when I turned down the window he said: What is that?!?!?!? I said: 350bhp & diesel. I should have said it was stock.

Then the light turned green so not much time to talk. And after the light there's a corner so I was in the inside and when we were doing 60 we could both nail it again, and I gained on him through second. My car was, to my suprise, slightly faster through 2nd gear.

Then we parted ways. He was shocked as hell.

Just figured I'd share this story. Shows how fast a tuned diesel is. I previously owned an E46M3 (a coupe though) so it was a delight when I heared it scream to full 8k rpm.

Good stuff! I wish we (550/545 owners) had the torque numbers the diesels have.

There's been a number of threads about 545's doing the same thing with the convertible. It's just the coupe we (535/545/550) can't handle

I'm betting a 550i can beat a M3 coupe with some "Mind Candy" mods. We need a M3 coupe for the Launch Meet this Sunday!

Great semi-kill. Glad to hear of all successes by the diesel guys.

Remember, I rolled even with an M3 coupe that looked to be modded. It had very fat tires.

Nice kill...guess torque settles the winner at the very end. But I wasz not surprised with the result though. In stock form, isn't the M3 convertible equal or slightly slower than the 545/550i?? A chiptuned 535d with 350hpo would obviously be faster and hence beat the crap out of the M3. But on the twisties, the e60 can never match the M3.

PS: I am also looking for a chiptuning solution at a low price. Called and emailed upsolute in MA but no answer, I think they went bankrupt or something...sigh.

Email Rene Berube at rberube@upsolute.com. I believe he's based out of their Austria headquarters. He was pretty helpful when I originally contacted them last year and provided me with local contacts.

Regarding the original post, great story! Always good to hear about the potential of our cars. One thing I was a bit confused about was in the fourth paragraph where you said you were gaining on him in second. Were you behind then meaning he was faster through the corner? Just curious. Trying to play the video in my mind...
