I sort of doubt it's the first thing he did... sounds weird. The black part of the mirror serves no other purpose than being a "relic" from racing - allowing the car to be easily recognized by teammates looking in their rear view mirror, at least as far as I can remember reading on M5Board.com. Although - as with the extended lights package on our fivers - I guess there may also be a set of lights on the underside of the mirror.

Something interesting... had my wife translate the comment that accompanied this photo.? Stated that the black portion is not a blinker but a footlight!? Got me...? Also, said this mirror was the very first design Chris Bangle did at BMW, so they (the Japanese) consider it to be very special.? Some interesting stuff in this site.? Anyone need translating, shoot me an email and I'll have my wife help us out.

..." Anyone need translating, shoot me an email and I'll have my wife help us out."

...or you can also go to:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

and paste the link. It will translate (as best as it could) from Japanese to English.
Great site, Hidde!

Yes, it's for sale in Japan. But I'm not sure if you can get the mirror in your country.

Hidde, one awesome website!

There must be tonnes of info in there to consume only if we can read japanese.
I will be thrilled if you could have a sub forum with english language and that will help us who are interested in asking questions and get response in english from owner who understand english as well. What do you think?

Cheers!
