On the driver's side too, that must have been scary! Like others have stated, very glad no one was hurt. Car's can be fixed or replaced, people though, can't easily be fixed and definitely can't be replaced.

OMG that looks like it was massively scary. I think I'd rather be in a 30mph head-on collision than in that one you had. I guess it took out the drivers window too. Did the side-airbags offer protection from the smashing glass? I hope so.

I bring a spare with me - just in case...... (just coincidence, he thankfully saw the whole thing and made a statement)

Yeah, it's only metal, that can be fixed. Garage gave initial assessment that it's panel damage only, new wings and doors and maybe boot lid, no visible damage to central pillar. Have arranged for it to be collected by BMW dealer in the morning.

Airbags certainly cushioned the impact, but the glass just went everywhere. Truck driver stopped and the guards (police) came - other driver had no tax either (but had insurance) so he got fined for that.

Update: bmw garage have assessed the damage at ?16,000 (includes 93 hours labour!), have seen values for an equivalent 06 model from 19K up to about 24K, I think the book value comes in around 20K.

Seeing as I was totally innocent in this, I presume I can insist to be put back in a no-worse condition than I was in immediately before the accident?

Anyone any experience in beefing up a claim (legally, my neck is fine!!!) ? For example:

I also had bluetooth, which is not in most of the second hand cars I see advertised.
My car was mine from new, so would have had 1 owner at resale time, obviously if I get a second hand one that'll now be at least 2 owners at resale time.
Tax disc had 6 months to go
3 days missed at work (self employed) - one on day of crash, one to source a car and one to collect the car
We have regionalised plates in Ireland, a 2nd hand car will more than likely not have my local region on the number plates (not sure how that can be quantified)
Time, hassle and annoyance
