Its possible that the tires they put on the original poster's car were Goodyears because no Dunlops were available or maybe they used up the supply of Dunlops because so many of us got them replaced...

Good supposition Rudy, but my SA made the decision to forego another set of Dunlops (even though they were on hand) because of the potential for a never ending cycle of replacement. I would have been happy to be the recipient of perpetual replacements.

I wonder if the SA was aware of BMW's bulletin that pretty much forces them to follow the prescribed replacement process? I don't quite understand why they wouldn't just do what BMW says to do since they're getting paid to do it.

My SA had them re-align the car differently, then add Bridgestones! I have not noticed any difference between the tires, other than the cooler tread pattern of the Dunlop. I've had the 'stones for about 1000 mi with no issues.

Since Dunlop is now a part of Goodyear, the cost is still coming out of the same pocket. I think the primary intention was to get Dunlops on a high-profile, high performance car...and they probably damned-near gave them away to do it. Now, since nobody is actually BUYING RETAIL replacments of Dunlops, it's come home to bite the boys in Marketing. When my Dunlop SP2000 wore out on my E39, there were NONE IN THE COUNTRY. Right then, I questioned Dunlop's business practices, and bought Michelin Pilots.

I can't believe Rudy and others are on their 3rd+ set; that's astounding in the annals of warranty coverage. BMW must be really holding Dunlop's feet/tires to the fire on this one. But in the long run, what's the customer's perception? Long gone are the days when customers were discrete items and could be kept in the dark, until the Feds got wind of a widespread safety issue. In these days of internet discussions and publication of internal warranty bulletins, I wonder if BMW will be held harmless on this one?

Just how big the Dunlop stink was in Europe? Was it SAFETY based?

Cheers,
Ray Hull

The Dunlop issue was never an issue of safety, it was an issue of nuisance/customer satisfaction. The tires perform nicely for a runflat, they just get noisy after a while. I think the noise issue was something that only occurred on the E60 due to the suspension geometry and/or the Active Steering.

Together, Dunlop and BMW came up with a solution to keep the customer happy without having to spend more money than they had to...

Well I think it'll be cheaper for BMW / Dunlop to just give us Eagle F1s 1 time than giving us 3 sets of runflats.

If BMW is asking Dunlop to pay for the replacements (and why would Dunlop refuse and risk hurting their relationship with BMW) then it's logical that Dunlop would want to use their own tires as replacements.

A question to all, who has had one than one set of Dunlop's replaced under warranty? My replacement set have been howling for awhile, but I thought I was just stuck because they have already been replaced once.

I've had two replacement sets. The service bulletin does not mention anything about performing the replacement only once. If you think about it, since they're doing a replacement, they're agreeing that there's a problem. Why wouldn't they fix the problem again if it came up again?

Good luck -- hurry and complain before they come out with an amended service bulletin!
